This morning I was talking with my wife Liza about a post on my other blog, The Beausejour Pulpit, called “Is This The End of the World as we know it?” I shared with her how this post – which I wrote in May of this year – had gotten thousands of hits just in the past two weeks. At 8:00 this morning, I had 13,941 views on the page. Seven hours later, I captured this screen image and we were at 17,608 views. (Update: Four hours later, and we’re at 21,639 views, that’s over 10,000 today alone… unbelievable!).
And where did people stumble across my blog? By google / yahoo searches for “2012 the end of the world.” Man, people are going crazy about all of this Mayan Calendar / End of the World stuff!
So anyway, Liza asked me this question: How do you prepare for the end of the world? To the people who really believe that the world is going to end tomorrow, what are they doing? If you believed the world was going to end tomorrow, what would YOU do? Would you continue living your life the way you are today, or if not, what would you do differently? These are great questions to consider!
My friend and fellow blogger, Wendy Neudorf, posted some great thoughts on this on her “Inside the Writer” blog a few days ago in a post called “One Week Until the End of the World.” Like her, if I knew that the world was going to end tomorrow, I would most likely be spending my time with my family tonight, and make sure I shared with everyone I knew the way to find salvation and peace with God through Jesus Christ.
Which begs the question. Why don’t we live our lives like that every day? Why don’t we live our every day in light of eternity? The reality is, none of us is guaranteed another day on planet earth. Tragedy could strike us in the form of a natural disaster, an accident, an unforseen illness, or the day of the Lord Jesus Christ’s return could be upon us.
Concerning the timing of the last days, Jesus Himself said: “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows…And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another, Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come…But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be…Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:6-8,10-14,36-39,44).
Jesus is coming back SOON – are you ready?
