Living by Faith
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17).
(The following is the latest article I have written for the “Faith in Focus” column I write for our local newspaper, The Clipper).
The story is told of a house that caught fire one night, and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground below with outstretched arms, calling, “Jump! I’ll catch you.” He knew the boy had to jump to save his life. All the boy could see, however, was flame, smoke, and blackness. The boy was afraid to leave the roof, but his father kept yelling: “Jump! I will catch you.” The boy protested, “Daddy, I can’t see you!” The father replied, “But I can see you and that’s all that matters.”
The Christian life is like that story. It’s all about faith – trusting in a God you cannot see. Many people have a hard time with that! How do we know there’s a God? How do we know He’s good? How do we really know that He cares about us? These are all good questions to ask, and there is an answer: It’s found in the Bible.
The Bible is the Word of God, and it reveals to us what God is like. How do we know God is good, loving, and cares about us? The old Sunday school song rings true: “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
The more you learn about God, and the deeper you go in a personal relationship with Him, the more you will trust Him because you will discover that He is a faithful, promise-keeping God. And He is good!
