The One Resolution You MUST Make for the New Year:
I know, I know, it’s no longer the in vogue thing to do – making New Year’s Resolutions. Because of the fact that so many people break them before the end of the first week of January, why bother? Well, I want to challenge that sentiment today!
One of the great things about a New Year is that it’s the perfect time to start new and fresh – a very Biblical concept. God’s Word says, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.“ (Phil. 3:13-14).
That’s what a New Year is all about: Forget the past (all of your failures and mistakes), and reach forward (to all of the new and good things God has planned for you). You may have tried to make some positive changes in your life last year and it didn’t work, but that doesn’t matter. With January 1st comes a new day, a new month, and a whole new year. So let’s begin again!
So let’s assume you’ve made the decision to make a resolution – what kind should it be? For many people, they resolve to lose weight, quit a bad habit, or some other such thing. In my humble opinion, there is one resolution you must make for 2015: To get into God’s Word on a regular basis!
Nothing has the power to literally transform your life like the Bible! Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” And how is your mind renewed? By the Word of God.
So forget about all the times you’ve tried to read through the Bible and have failed. It’s a new year and a new season, and a time for you to grow, change, and be transformed! Here is a link to several different Bible Reading Plans. It includes this one from the Discipleship Journal which will take you through the New Testament in only 5 minutes a day reading 5 days a week – a great place for beginners to start! There are other more challenging ones as well to the more seasoned Bible reader.
I’ve also put together my own 5 Minute Bible Reading Challenge which will take you through the New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs by the end of the year. Whichever plan you choose, jump in, go for it, and never give up!
