THE STORY #1: CREATION: GOD’S GREATEST MASTERPIECE
(A Weekly Devotional Journey Through The Story by Pastor Chris Jordan)
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1).
What a brilliant introduction to God’s Story! The Bible doesn’t begin with “once upon a time” or “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” but “In the Beginning!” This bold statement tells us that everything that exists in our universe was created by God. From the sun, moon and the stars, to the mountains, oceans, and every living being, God made them all. In Genesis 1-2, we see the account of the six days of the creation story, culminating with God’s greatest masterpiece: Us!
“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion… over all the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them… Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” (Genesis 1:26-27,31).
The Bible account of creation teaches us that we are not a cosmic accident, merely complex evolved animals. Rather, we have been created in the image of God, and because of this, we have incredible value, meaning and purpose. However, because the devil tempted our first parents Adam and Eve to sin in the Garden of Eden, every one of us is born with a sin nature and separated from God. But because God is good and He loves us, He sent His son Jesus into the world to die on the Cross so our sins could be forgiven, and we could be restored to a right relationship with our Creator.
From the creation story we discover the supreme value of all human beings. God loves you, yes, even you! God longs to be with you. Think about that: The God of the universe literally wants to be with us more than anything on earth. The rest of the Bible is the story of God’s passionate and relentless pursuit of a relationship with us.
