STORY #3: JOSEPH: FROM SLAVE TO DEPUTY PHARAOH
“But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.” (Genesis 50:20).
In last week’s devotional, we looked at the story of Abraham. Well, Abraham had a son named Isaac, who in turn had a son named Jacob. And Jacob had twelve sons (busy guy!), and his favourite son was Joseph. We see Joseph’s story in Genesis chapters 37-50.
At the beginning of Joseph’s story, he has a dream, but unfortunately, when he shares his dream with his family, they don’t get as excited about it as he was. In fact, Joseph’s brothers hated him and his dreams so much, that they threw Joseph into a pit and sold him into slavery. As a slave, he ended up working for Potiphar in Egypt, where he was falsely accused of raping his boss’s wife, and he ended up in prison.
Some people might have lost their faith at this point and given up, but Joseph didn’t. All throughout Joseph’s many trials, troubles and tribulations, we learn that “The Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor… and the Lord was with him, and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.” (Genesis 39:21,23).
Fast forward Joseph’s story 13 years and you find him finally working for the Pharaoh in the palace… and his dreams have come true. And one day, when Joseph had an opportunity to exact revenge on his brothers for betraying him, he chose instead to forgive them. What an amazing faithful and godly example Joseph’s life is to us!
No matter what you’re going through today, never give up your dreams, because God is with you! Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). So whether discouraged sitting in a pit or prison, or you’re celebrating in a palace, remember – Jesus is always with you!
